Search for missing trio continues after teen girl is found [Ohio] [2010] [crime]

Relatives and friends of a missing Ohio woman will gather Monday morning to resume their search for her, her son and her friend.
On Sunday, the woman's 13-year-old daughter was found gagged and bound in the basement of a Mount Vernon, Ohio, home.
But the 32-year-old woman, Tina Herrmann, remains missing, along with her 10-year-old son, Kody Maynard, and her 41-year-old friend Stephanie Sprang.
All four of them had been missing since Thursday.
After her discovery, the teen -- Sarah Maynard -- was taken to a hospital for evaluation and treatment of non-life-threatening injuries, said Knox County Sheriff David Barber. Authorities had interviewed her "somewhat," he said, but would not divulge what was said. Police think she had been held since Wednesday, he said.
The teen was recovered in an early morning raid on the home involving a SWAT team.
Matthew Hoffman, 30, who lives in the home, was taken into custody after the raid, Barber said, and faces a kidnapping charge. Additional charges are expected, Barber said.
A combination of intelligence received and investigative work led authorities to the home, Barber said. Authorities were hoping they would find all four people, but knew they might find only Sarah Maynard, he said.
Police were still investigating whether Hoffman knew any of the four, he said. Asked whether Hoffman was cooperating,Police were still investigating whether Hoffman knew any of the four, he said. Asked whether Hoffman was cooperating with authorities, Barber said he was not.
Herrmann failed to report to work at a Dairy Queen in Mount Vernon, in central Ohio, on Wednesday, Barber told. A deputy twice went to her home in Howard, about nine miles east of Mount Vernon, and saw her pickup there. No one answered the door, though lights were on in the home.
A Dairy Queen manager went into the home on Thursday and found blood inside, Barber told the station.
Hermann's truck was found Thursday night near Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio, about seven miles southwest of Howard, authorities said.
The children were in school Wednesday, but not Thursday, the sheriff said. Sprang's car was found at Herrmann's home.
Asked about Hoffman's criminal record, Barber said he served prison time for an arson conviction in another state. He said authorities think Hoffman could "absolutely" lead police to the other three.
Mount Vernon is about 50 miles northeast of Columbus, Ohio.

Man declared dead in arrested in kidnapping case [2010] [California] [Ny] [USA] [news]

Federal agents in Gulfport, Mississippi, arrested Sunday a 53-year old man, declared dead in 1994, on kidnapping charges.
Thomas Steven Sanders was arrested in the early morning at a Flying J Truck Stop. He is suspected in the abduction of Lexis Roberts, 12, of Las Vegas, Nevada. She was later found dead.
His capture is unusual because Sanders was legally declared dead in Mississippi by family members some 16 years ago.
"However, we now know that he is still alive and has ties to several states across the country," the FBI said in a statement earlier this month.
Sanders, who is thought to be missing most of his teeth, has changed his appearance several times over the years. He is described as a white male, around 200 pounds with brown eyes.
In September, Sanders was seen purchasing bullets at a local Wal-Mart in Las Vegas. The ammunition he bought was consistent with the caliber weapon used during Roberts' homicide, the FBI said.
The girl's remains were found by hunters in early October in a wooded area north of Harrisonburg, Louisiana. She was last seen with her mother, Suellen Roberts, and Sanders.
Sanders was alone at the time of his arrest.
