Today and tomorrow (Wednesday, November 17 and Thursday, November 18) are the best days for viewing this year’s Leonid meteor shower.  But you’ll need to get up early to see it – Star Date Magazine [via Manolith] reports that the shower will be at its best for viewing about 2-3 hours before sunrise.
Though the number of meteors that the Leonid shower produces is always somewhat uncertain, Star Date predicts that if skies are clear, we can expect to see at least 20 meteors this time around!
Star gazing (or in this case, meteor watching) is helped by the fact that the moon sets several hours before daybreak, thereby not washing out any meteors in the first few hours before dawn, which is why that time is anyone’s best chance at catching a glimpse of the shower.
To get the best view, check out state or city parks, or other safe dark sites away from city lights.  Lying on a blanket or reclining chair also gives you a full view of the sky.
